Singers to be lauded at Marley fun day

Written by

SINGERS Barrington Levy, Half Pint, and Tony Tuff will be honoured at this year's Bob Marley One Love Fun Day f ootball matches, according to event conceptualiser Clive “Busy” Campbell.

The occasion, now in its 37th year, is scheduled for Harbour View Mini Stadium in St Andrew on Ash Wednesday, February 15.

Campbell said it is fitting these artistes be honoured, given their body of work.

“These singers have so many hit songs; they deserve to be recognised for their contribution to Jamaican music. They're so many artistes doing great work for a number of years and they should be lauded,” he told the Jamaica Observer.

Levy, whose career took off in the 1970s, has one of the strongest catalogues in dancehall/reggae. His hit songs include Under Mi Sensi, Black Roses, My Woman, Looking My Love, On The Telephone and Work. His 2015 album, Acousticalevy, was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Reggae Album category.

Half Pint came to prominence in the 1980s. His signature tracks include Greetings, Level The Vibes, Hold On, No Substitute Lover, and One Big Family.

Tony Tuff is the elder of the trio. His career began in the late 1960s as a member of the The African Brothers, which also comprised Sugar Minott and Derrick “Bubbles” Howard.

As a solo act, he found commercial success with producer Henry “Junjo” Lawes on the singles Water Pumpee and Mix Me Down.

Campbell was involved in the sports and entertainment sectors as a player (with Santos) and producer. Several entertainers have been honoured by his event including Bunny Wailer, Freddie McGregor, Boris Gardiner, Errol Dunkley, Derrick Harriott, Jimmy Riley, Winston Riley, Stranger Cole, the I-Three and King Stitt.

Proceeds from the match will be used to purchase computers and printers for a basic school to be named.

Konshens debuts urban wear

Written by

Available on his website, the line features hats, T-shirts and hooded pullovers. Some items bear the song title Turn Me On from the deejay's 2017 hit single, while others feature a photo of Konshens and his name.

But this is not Konshens's first set of merchandise. The Gyal A Bubble deejay launched a shoe line, Konz 876, back in September 2013. Speaking to the Jamaica Observer at the time of the launch at West King's House Road in Kingston, Konshens said he had always wanted to get into merchandising.

“We can go the dancehall way and add a little controversy to it and tell the fans that we and another artiste is at war, or that I am involved with a particular girl, or we can think like a businessman and give them a product. This is an avenue of where we can give the world more of our culture and the market is there for it,” he said at the time.

Last year, Shaggy and Alkaline launched their respective clothing lines.

Konshens said he is gearing up to release his third album, called IFG, later this year. Better Money, the project's debut single, is produced by Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor and was released last month.

His last album, Mental Maintenance in 2012, included tracks like Do SumnShe's Happy and Represent. Two years prior, his debut album Real Talk was only released in Japan. It included tracks This Means MoneyPretty Devil, and Good Girl Gone Bad featuring Tarrus Riley.

He said contrary to reports that Lil Win is more popular than he is, any Kumawood actor is yet to reach the height he [Agya Koo] has reached.

He claimed this was after he refused to pose naked in the historical 'Komfo Anokye movie.

The “Taking Over” hit maker was seen exchanging pleasantries with some cast of the popular TV series which airs on a number of television stations in the country.

Among the cast who welcomed Shatta Wale to the set were the famous Lawyer Nti and Judge Louis Lamis.

Not too long ago, some of the actors of the comedy series called on Shatta Wale to present him with a script to the movie.

The musician who is noted for his powerful and energy-filled stage performances has charted a new path for himself in the world of acting with his involvement with the cast and crew of his first movie, Kejetia vrs Makola – The Movie.

Shatta Wale made headlines last week as he became the latest musician to the added to the star-studded artistes who had been signed by entertainment powerhouse, Zylofon Media.

According to many reports, Shatta Wale’s services for Zylofon Media was going to fetch him $1.5 Million, a car and a house.

Popular Ghanaian actor, Alexander Kofi Adu, popularly known as Agya Koo has chided radio presenter, Kwasi Aboagye over his comments on his yet-to-be-launched television channel which is being supported by the government.

The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Catherine Afeku at a Press Meeting held on Monday, January 29 in Accra, announced the launch of Agya Koo and Daddy Lumba TV, which she said would be part of efforts to promote local content on television.

The announcement of the initiative, however, met heavy criticisms from many entertainers including the host of Peace FM’s Entertainment Review, Kwasi Aboagye, who reportedly said the idea was “nonsense”.

But speaking to Agyemang Prempeh (Agyengo) on Power Entertainment in Power 97.9FM Saturday evening, Agya Koo did not take it lightly with his critics, saying they envy his success in the entertainment industry.

The irked actor went for Kwasi Aboagye’s jugular over his comments and alleged that the broadcaster hates him for his successes over the years.

“Did he want the government to launch Kwasi Aboagye TV for him? He works at UTV, I’m doing my own so what’s his problem? Let me state that he does not like me and it didn’t start recently. If he’s brave he should go and stop the project. He should not be on radio and insult me. He’s just jealous. I started my career before him. Who’s Kwasi Aboagye to criticise the idea? Is he sensible than the Minister or is he sensible than I am? if he’s smart as he claims, he should go and stop the project,” Agya Koo fumed.

The Kumawood actor said Mr Aboagye’s comments were out of envy and his conspicuous penchant to suppress the success of Agya Koo TV.

Explaining the motive behind the move, Agya Koo stated the TV, which shows some of his old comic performances, had started airing on mobile phones and is being enjoyed and patronised by many in the country and abroad.

“Some of my old works are on the TV which is being piloted on mobile phones for now until we officially launch it,” said the comedian who disclosed his commitment to the success of the project.

He said Agya Koo TV is part of is his contribution to the promotion of local content in the Ghanaian media space, therefore he has no time for detractors like Kwasi Aboagye.

But in a sharp rebuttal on the show, Kwasi Aboagye denied attacking Agya Koo. He confirmed criticising the idea to create a government-funded television station for Agya Koo and Hi-life musician Daddy Lumba on Entertainment Review on peace FM last Thursday. To him, there was “no sense” in the idea Madam Catherine Afeku announced.

“I spoke Twi and not English. I did not use ‘foolish’ in my submission. I made that comment as an opinion and said it did not make any sense to launch a TV for the two. I said the two campaigned for the NPP and so I did not see any progress Agya Koo TV and Daddy Lumba TV will make to the industry except for their individual gains,” he said.

Apart from the Radio presenter, Renowned entertainment critic and artiste manager, Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson otherwise known as Bulldog, also kicked against the idea and said the Tourism ministry wanted to reward the two (Agya Koo and Daddy Lumba) for their contribution to the fortunes of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2016 elections.

Describing the idea as “unfair” on Accra-based Hitz FM, Bulldog said “We have Kumawood so why won’t you create Kumawood TV? We pride ourselves in highlife so why not highlife and hip-life TV? I don’t understand where these ideas are coming from. They have shown us that there is reward in supporting political parties. . . Why won’t you say Ghanaian Music TV and Ghanaian Movie TV? So, now Agya Koo is the icon of movies? Where are the people who came before Lumba? Do you expect Kojo Antwi to go on Daddy Lumba TV? It is sad. And this is the mother speaking. Tourism TV makes sense but for Agya Koo TV, Daddy Lumba TV, how?”
